What is the best type of light bulb to help the environment and save you money?

With lighting accounting for approximately 10% of the average household's energy bill, switching to energy-efficient lighting is one of the simplest and quickest ways to reduce power usage, saving you money and benefiting the environment.

So what are the different types of Energy-Efficient Light Bulbs?

Low-energy light globes are available in a variety of types, including LED (light-emitting diode), Halogen, and Compact Fluorescent Lamps.

LEDs use less energy but emit the same amount of light as CFLs or Halogen globes. They are a little more expensive, but they last much longer, saving you money.

LED Lights:

LED's have a 20-year lifetime and can produce more lights with fewer watts. They are 85% more energy-efficient than traditional light bulbs, saving you and the environment.

LED globes are available for pendant lights, desk lamps and outdoor garden lights. They don't always work with traditional dimmer switches, so if you want dimmable LED lighting, make sure you select an LED bulb that is compatible with dimmers or we can assist in replacing your current dimmer switch.

Compact fluorescent lights (CFLs)

Fluorescent tubes bent into the form of a regular light fitting are known as CFLs. They have the same brightness and colours as traditional globes, but use a quarter of the energy and last up to 30 times longer. This will cost you in the short term but save you in the long run.

Halogen lights

Halogen lights produce bright, strong light and, while they are typically more expensive than standard light bulbs, they are approximately 25% more effective and can last up to three times longer.

They are available in a variety of shapes and colours, as well as the ability to be dimmed.

Eco halogen lights

Eco-halogen bulbs provide natural dimmable light and last twice as long as standard halogen globes. They are available in both traditional bulb and downlight shapes.

Comparing LED, CFLs and Halogen lights

LED comes out on top when all three options are considered the winner. LEDs will save you money on your electricity bill and benefit our environment greatly by reducing waste because you will not need to change your bulbs as frequently, and less energy will be used, thus helping our planet.
